CNN Did Not Caucasianize Chris Harper Mercer

This post is an FYI for those who may still be unaware that the accusation that CNN lightened a picture of Chris Harper Mercer has been walked back by the website that popularized said accusation.

Over the past several days, I have seen this story circulating among White Whateverists, Alternative Right Wingers, and the tinfoil hat brigade at Conspiracy Central. The source of the claim was The Conservative Treehouse. Quoting, with referenced picture below:

On the left is the selfie Christopher Mercer uploaded to his social media. On the right is how CNN presented the same selfie in broadcast stories about him.  Why did CNN need to change the complexion (color) of their broadcast?

Well, they didn't. This was a hoax, and The Conservative Treehouse fell for it and perpetuated the fraud. Days later, they offered this clarification, but failed to outright admit their error:

CNN denies attribution. Absent our ability to return to source origination for further inquiry, the comparative side-by-side image should be considered suspect, and quite possibly false.

Quite possibly? Ya think?  So you just run with any bit of rubbish you can scrounge up without independent confirmation and then equivocate when someone calls BS. Pathetic. But why should we expect alternative media sources to be any more forthright and conscientious then their bigger, meaner, mainstream counterparts from whom they suckled?
